Life Skills (PSHE & RSE)
At St Paul’s Primary School, we encompass Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) under a subject our children know and love as Life Skills. Taught as a discrete weekly lesson, Life Skills provides a dedicated, structured space for pupils to build the self-awareness, emotional literacy, and practical tools needed to navigate modern life safely and confidently.
We follow the progressive Kapow Primary scheme of work, which fully meets all statutory Department for Education guidelines for Relationships, Sex, and Health Education. Built on a "spiral curriculum" model, Kapow revisits essential themes every year—deepening children's understanding in an age-appropriate way as they move through primary school.
During their discrete Life Skills lessons, pupils explore five core areas:
-
Families and Relationships: Developing positive friendships, understanding diverse family structures, resolving conflict, and practicing empathy.
-
Health and Wellbeing: Nurturing physical health, mental wellbeing, emotional regulation, and self-care routines.
-
Safety and the Changing Body: Staying safe both online and offline, recognizing personal boundaries, and understanding body changes during puberty.
-
Citizenship: Discovering community roles, human rights, celebrating diversity, and learning how to be an active citizen.
-
Economic Wellbeing: Building foundational knowledge around money management, saving, and future careers.
By giving Life Skills its own distinct time on the timetable, we create a safe, respectful environment for open discussion and critical thinking, ensuring every child feels valued, empowered, and thoroughly prepared for their next steps into secondary school and beyond.
